A Transformative High School Story of Perseverance
Back when I was a freshman in high school, a girl who weighed 260 pounds arrived at the track and field tryouts at the same time as me. Her name was Sara, and the only reason she was there was because her doctor had insisted it was crucial for her health. However, as soon as she looked around at the group of students gathered on the field, she spun on her heels and started to leave. The coach, O’Leary, noticed her immediately, ran over, and gently guided her back toward the group.
“I’m not slim enough for this kind of sport!” Sara announced firmly. “And I never will be! Losing that much weight feels utterly impossible. I’ve attempted it before and failed every time.”
Coach O’Leary acknowledged her words with a nod and explained that her current body type wasn’t ideal at that weight. “It would be perfect at 220 pounds,” he told her straightforwardly.
Sara appeared puzzled by his response. “Everyone else says I have to drop 130 pounds,” she countered. “Are you saying just 40 pounds would make the difference?”
Coach O’Leary confirmed his point with another nod.
Sara began her journey as a shot put athlete, but she dedicated every afternoon to running and training alongside the entire track team. Her competitive spirit shone through, and by the conclusion of our freshman year, she had reduced her weight to 219 pounds. That same year, she earned second place in the county shot put competition. Fast forward three years to our senior year, and she secured third place in the county’s 10K run, competing at a weight of 132 pounds.
There was a period when Sara truly believed weight loss was out of reach, based on her previous unsuccessful attempts. She had stumbled multiple times, which eroded her belief in her own abilities. Yet, through unwavering consistency—establishing effective daily routines and committing to persistent efforts—she restored her self-assurance and accomplished what once seemed unattainable. Recently, at my poolside birthday celebration in Miami, I couldn’t help but grin when I heard another guest praising her impressive physique.
Sara continues to put in significant effort each day, making smart choices to sustain her accomplishments.
And I do the same…
I Experience Failures and Confidence Dips Just Like Everyone Else
Many folks assume that because I am a New York Times bestselling author and a coach with over 15 years of experience guiding people toward greater success and fulfillment in life, I never encounter setbacks or disappointments in these domains. In reality, nothing could be further from the truth—I am just as human as anyone. I stumble and fail more frequently than most people might guess, and definitely more often than I prefer to acknowledge. The emotional sting of these failures hits me just as hard as it does for you or anybody else, leading to moments where my self-confidence wanes significantly.
At my core, I recognize that dwelling on these adverse feelings serves no productive purpose. Instead, I take responsibility for what transpired, extract valuable insights, and rise once more to give it another go. The crucial element—the act of attempting again—is what truly matters most.
- I occasionally falter in maintaining a healthy diet and regular exercise, yet I persist by trying anew.
- There are times when self-love eludes me, but I refuse to abandon myself, so I make another effort.
- I sometimes fall short as a mother and spouse, particularly amid demanding business pressures that distract me, but I continue striving and frequently manage to bring a genuine smile to my son’s or husband’s face.
- Even this very article posed a challenge—I drafted an initial version yesterday, but discarded it because it didn’t resonate properly. Undeterred, I began afresh, and now it’s complete.
The essential truth is this: when we repeatedly try despite setbacks, we frequently achieve success and, over time, develop a much stronger sense of self-worth.
If there’s a single key takeaway from this piece, let it be that persisting—granting yourself daily opportunities to retry—is invariably worthwhile. This principle forms the bedrock for the three strategies outlined below, which my husband Marc and I credit for our personal achievements and growth, as well as the progress of the more than 700 remarkable coaching clients we’ve supported throughout our 15+ years of practice.
1. Assess Your Everyday Routines and Their Outcomes
No matter your innate skills, expertise, personal background, or individual vision of success, achievement doesn’t materialize overnight. It emerges progressively through your dedication to repeated attempts—cultivating consistent daily practices and rituals that accumulate steady advancement, regardless of obstacles.
Take a close look at your own daily habits and routines. What do they entail?
It’s vital to examine this thoroughly and establish consistency in what truly benefits you each day. Failure creeps in gradually, just as success does. Those minor daily shortcomings—the ones from which you fail to learn and adapt—pile up over time, culminating in major disappointments. Consider this in the context of managing a business:
- You repeatedly neglect to review your financial records.
- You consistently skip making essential outreach calls.
- You overlook truly hearing your customers’ needs.
- You resist innovating as needed.
- You procrastinate on the small, necessary tasks.
Eventually, you awaken to discover your entire enterprise has collapsed. It stems not from a single dramatic catastrophe, but from the accumulation of those everyday actions—or inactions—that define your habits.
The critical realization here is that your life operates like your personal business.
Far too many individuals place excessive emphasis on one monumental, life-altering event while downplaying the profound impact of wise daily decisions and incremental advancements. Avoid falling into that trap.
Continually remind yourself that nearly every outcome in your life, whether favorable or unfavorable, arises from countless small choices accumulated over time. The everyday actions you take hold immense power.
2. Shift from Obsessing Over Goals to Nurturing Supportive Daily Practices
The idea of progressing one day at a time, one step at a time, may appear exceedingly straightforward, yet we all occasionally succumb to the allure of the present moment, craving immediate results. We desire our objectives fulfilled right away, and this impatience frequently lures us into overcommitting prematurely. Marc and I have witnessed this pattern countless times: a client or student aims to conquer multiple ambitious targets simultaneously, struggles to prioritize even one or two key daily practices, accomplishes little of substance, and slowly erodes their own self-belief. Let this prevalent pitfall—the pursuit of rapid solutions—serve as your catalyst for change today.
You cannot hoist a thousand pounds in a single lift, but you can readily manage one pound repeated a thousand times. It’s those modest, recurring, building-block efforts that lead to triumph. Progress isn’t instantaneous, but it outpaces stagnation by a wide margin.
Make a deliberate effort to redirect your attention from overarching life ambitions toward the specific daily behaviors that propel them forward. Reflect on these examples:
- As a competitive athlete, your aim is victory in events. Your practice is the daily time invested in physical and mental conditioning.
- As a college student, your pursuit is knowledge and a diploma. Your practice is your consistent study schedule.
- As a parent or caregiver, your mission is exemplary guidance. Your practice is the daily commitment to modeling positive behavior.
- As a person, your aspiration is a purposeful existence. Your practices are the incremental positive strides you make daily.
Imagine pausing your fixation on a major goal temporarily and channeling all energy into its aligned daily practice. Would advancement still occur? For instance, in pursuing weight loss, if you ceased dwelling on shedding twenty pounds and concentrated solely on nutritious eating and daily workouts, would the weight drop? Absolutely. You’d inch toward your ideal weight organically, without constant goal-oriented rumination.
What if you slip up now and then? Acknowledge it, extend yourself compassion, and resume the effort.
One day, one step—steadily forward.
3. Use Minor Wins to Strengthen Your Self-Assurance
Cultivating and sustaining self-confidence stands as perhaps the most profound, often overlooked reward of adhering to daily practices—of relentlessly pursuing improvement. Prior to adopting these routines, I grappled with doubt about my capacity to realize the positive changes I sought. Past reliance on fleeting remedies had led to repeated letdowns, fostering deep discouragement that prompted me to favor delay over action on my self-commitments. Effectively, I had undermined faith in my potential and my worth. It mirrors the erosion of trust when someone repeatedly deceives you—you eventually cease believing them. Similarly, unfulfilled personal pledges breed self-distrust over time.
The remedy mirrors rebuilding interpersonal trust: restore your self-confidence methodically through modest commitments, incremental actions (your daily practices), and emerging small triumphs. This requires patience and persistence, but it yields transformative results—one of the most empowering shifts you can make for your well-being.
Marc and I foster a core practice of affirmative self-examination among our readers via daily journaling, as featured in our book, The Good Morning Journal: Powerful Prompts & Reflections to Start Every Day.
Your Opportunity to Reclaim Confidence Awaits
Now it’s your moment to revitalize your self-confidence by embracing these effective daily practices and trying again with renewed purpose. By consistently applying these three essential strategies—evaluating your habits, prioritizing supportive routines over distant goals, and stacking small victories—you’ll steadily rebuild a robust sense of self-belief and propel your personal development forward. Sara’s story illustrates the power of persistence, and your own journey can follow a similar path of remarkable transformation through everyday dedication.
